Arrival In Brazil

So, I wrote this blog post on Friday night in Word.  The internet at the hotel isn’t working in the room even though they gave us the password.  I don’t know what’s going on, but none of us can connect.  So I'm posting this from the lobby, and it takes forever to upload pictures, so I'll add more later.

Anyways, the trip down here went fine.  I sat next to Diego and Gabriel on the flight from Orlando to Sao Paulo.  They really enjoyed the games available on their personal entertainment system in the back of the seat in front of them.  Diego found the time to point out to me every time he won a hand of video poker against the computer despite his reckless playing style.  He either won it all or lost it all fast.  That’s what happens when you continue to bet despite having a 2-7 off suit in the hole.

We had very little time in the Sao Paulo airport.  We made it through customs, checked our bags again, and made it to the gate in time to catch the last bus to our plane.

While waiting to pick up our bags in the Salvador airport, who do we see but Cruzeiro, the team we play tomorrow.  They have some big boys on their team, but size is the least of my concerns for tomorrow.  I’m worried about how we play together, if we’ve had enough time to gel and play as one.
A bus was waiting for us to take us to our hotel.  We drove for about 15 minutes, and they dropped us off, a nice hotel, small soccer field on the side, fancy lobby.  But no sooner had we gotten our bags into the lobby than they realized they had taken us to the wrong hotel!  Apparently this hotel is for the Brazilian U17 national team.   So, we put our bags back in the bus and then proceeded to drive around for 20 more minutes, making 2 u-turns in the process before the driver finally found the hotel we were actually staying at.  And who else should be staying there too, but Cruzeiro!

The hotel rooms are small, and we’re crowding three people into each room.

But the views make up for it.

The beach is gorgeous, but a little dangerous due to all the rocks and strong surf, so the players aren’t allowed in the water during the afternoon when the waves are stronger.

We have added 6 Brazilian players to our team, and I’m still trying to learn all of their names.  Unfortunately, only two of them speak any English, and only one of them, Matheus, really understands me.  So I had Matheus translate for me as I explained our formation and tactics.  I had no to paper to use, so we did this on the beach where I could draw on the sand.  Probably the coolest chalkboard session I’ve ever done.

The food has been pretty good here at the hotel.  The beef and onions at lunch was very good, and rice and beans is good too.  It seems they will serve rice and beans at every meal.  There’s also some kind of cilantro-pepper salsa at each meal that is insanely hot.  They served us some kind of fruit juice that was a little bitter and not very sweet.  Everyone was kind of disappointed until one of the staff assigned to us pointed out that we were supposed to add sugar to it at the table.  Within seconds everybody was pouring sugar packets and the sound of drinks being stirred was louder than any conversation.

Now I’m sitting in the hotel room trying to figure out the best way to approach tomorrow’s game from a personnel standpoint.  I need to make sure I have cover on the bench at every position, but at the same time I want to start the strongest team possible so that we can keep the game competitive for as long as possible.  There has been somebody setting of fireworks outside the hotel.  I’ve heard that the 3rd of July is a Brazilian holiday, so maybe someone’s starting their celebrations early.

That’s gonna do it for me.  I’ll do my best to get internet tomorrow so I can post this and the result of our first game.

Sorry for this short post

So this is an incredibly disappointing first post from Brazil, but the wireless isn´t working here at the hotel, so the only available internet is on the one hotel computer, and it´s incredibly slow at that.  So, I wrote a post in word on my laptop, and will post it when i can get wireless working.  As for now, just know that me and the team made it safe to our hotel here in Salvador.  Our first game is tomorrow afternoon against Cruzeiro.  They are expected to be one of the best teams at the tournament, and they´re staying at our hotel too.  So, hopefully we´ll acquit ourselves well and will be able to hold our heads high when we see them around the hotel the rest of the week.

It Begins...

So this isn't a post with new pictures or a cool story from a foreign country (hopefully those will come soon).  Instead this is just the last thing I do in my house here in Gainesville before I disconnect the modem and get in my car to drive to Miami.  In case I hadn't explained before, I'm driving to Miami to leave my car at the Airport La Quinta there so I will have it when I return from Brazil and Europe.  After dropping my Corolla "Layla" off there I'll take a bus to the Orlando airport.  Alot of travel, that's why I'm getting it started at 5:30 in the morning.  So, long day ahead of me.  See you on the other side of the world!

Video from Ginnie Springs

Apparent Blogger Expert Jen Vail notified me of the inability of Blogger to handle large video files, like an HD video file.  So, on her advice, I have uploaded it to youtube here.  This will probably be my procedure from now on.  I'm also going to keep the videos unlisted in case any of the parents of the kids on my Brazil trip don't want their precious little ones pasted all over the internet for anyone to see.  So you'll have to click the links here in the blog to find the videos.

Ginnie Springs Dive and New Itinerary

Busy busy day, just got back from coaching my team in a scrimmage (played pretty well) and then played some pickup afterwards.  So, let's get into it.  Woke up bright and early to get the dive shop by 7.  My dive instructor was Lloyd Bailey, the self-proclaimed "most prolific cave diver ever".  His basis for said title is that he apparently has instructed more divers to their cave diving certification than any other person.  No word yet as to whether Guinness Book of World Records recognizes his accomplishments...haha.

I was a little bit less comfortable than I thought I would be, but felt comfortable again by the end.  As you can tell from the pictures the water is incredibly shallow.  I used the GoPro underwater with the flat lens and a red filter.  I used my dad's Canon for out of the water pictures, and I don't have a card reader for the CF card that the Canon uses, so I can't post any of those pictures, but as for the underwater shots....heeeeeeeerrrrrreeeeee'ssssss Johnny!

After a few pics, I started photographing this guy.

He apparently loved being photographed because he swam closer.

I was even able to get him to pose with me in this shot.

I'm running into errors when I try to upload the movie onto the blog, so I'll try to figure that out tomorrow.

After diving, I met my friend Brandon for lunch and picked up the Brazilian and Euro currency I ordered from the bank.

Oh, and the new itinerary.  Smith and I bought our tickets from Croatia back to Germany so we have definite dates there, and we've made some decisions on other things too.  So, the new itinerary is:

And the preparation continues....

I'm preparing for some scuba action on this trip by taking a refresher dive course tomorrow morning at Ginnie Springs.  It's hard to believe it's been 3 years since I last dove at the Great Barrier Reef.  Time flies way too fast.  Hopefully, the guide will let me wear my new GoPro so I can post my own pictures and video on this blog for the first time.

And I've started looking for places to stay in Croatia.  Since it's not as popular of a tourist destination as other places, the hostel scene is a little less developed, and a friend told me that a popular way to stay in Croatia is to stay with a family at their house, called a 'soba'.  But it sucks, because when I search for sobas in Croatia the best I can find is a place like this:

with a private balcony like this:

and a view like this:

I mean honestly, how can I be expected to live like this?  But don't worry, I'm sure I'll manage to suffer through it.

What to do? What to do?

Super psyched that I got my Lonely Planet: Croatia in the mail yesterday, but of course now I'm struggling to narrow down a list of all the things I want to do and see.  The historical dowtown of Dubrovnik, the water wonder world of Plitvice Lakes Park, the caves and grottos of Bisevo, the culinary paradise of Istria, the beach party life of Hvar Town, the medieval castles of Zagorje, aaaaaaaaahhhhhh!  I'm losing my mind!  (in a good way)

One thing I have decided we HAVE to add, is the Grossglockner High Alpine Road in Austria.  It's way out of the way on the drive between Vienna and Croatia, but you've got to see the pictures of this road.

36 hairpin turns in 48km!  plus all of this scenery!  I wanna demolish that rental car on this road!

Rough Trip Plan

So, first post in a new blog.  Let's see if I can stay true to this one.  I've dismally failed to document travels in journal format during multiple previous trips.  I journalized for about a week or two in my five month study abroad in Spain and wrote down observations for all of 2 days of my 9 weeks in Australia.  This will be the first time I use the blog format, so hopefully I'll do better.  This blog will also be doubling as my way of letting parents of the kids I'm coaching know how the trip is going and easing their minds as to the health and condition of their sons.  In that way, I almost have to record the first couple weeks in Brazil.  For these reasons, I have high hopes for keeping this blog up to date and detailed.

Now, the trip plan.  It's not very detailed.  In some ways that's on purpose.  I grew up with family trips that were meticulously planned by my mom, but my time in Australia taught me that I prefer to not have every minute planned out.

June 28th - fly to Brazil
June 29th - arrive in Brazil, training session with team
June 30th - July 5th - tournament in Brazil, game every day except the 3rd
July 6th - fly back to Miami
July 7th - free day in Miami, hopefully diving in Key Largo
July 8th - fly to Duesseldorf, Germany
July 9th - arrive in Duesseldorf, take train to meet Smith in Enschede, Netherlands
July 9th - 13th - hanging out in Enschede
July 13th - 15th - weekend trip, Brussels?
July 16th & 17th - back in Enschede
July 17th - fly to Vienna
July 18th - July 22nd - Staying with friend's family in Vienna
July 23rd - drive to Croatia
July 24th - 29th - Croatia and make our way back to Duesseldorf
July 30th - fly back stateside
