Belgian Beginnings

Author’s note:  This post covers the day of July 13th.  It was written on the morning of July 14th.

On Friday morning we slept in a bit because we were tired from the soccer the previous night.  So I made breakfast so that Smith could pack up and still make it to work on time.  I spent the morning organizing things, packing, downloading pictures, charging batteries, etc.

Smith got back at 2 and we tried securing my small suitcase to the back of his bike, but it was just barely too big.  So, we started speed walking towards the train station.  Made it there in time to grab some lunch to take on the train and boarded the first of many trains.  From Enschede we rode to Hengelo.  From Hengelo we rode to Zutphen.  From Zutphen we rode to Roosendaal.  And from Roosendaal we rode through Antwerp and into Brussels.

And found their version of Food Lion?

We got into Brussels (or Bruxelles, however you want to spell it) at just before 8.  We found our hotel with only minor navigational difficulties and then walked to Chez Leon for dinner.  This place seems to cater to a mixture of locals and tourists.  We had the Belgian specialty of mussels and fries with a cold beer to wash it down.

After dinner we had more minor navigational difficulties finding the bar we were looking for, but it was worth the trouble.  The beer was amazing.  The bar’s specialty, Mort Subite, is a white lambic that smells so ridiculously fruity and tastes like an amazing witbier.  The Rochefort 8 was my favorite.  Imagine a bolder more flavorful Newcastle.  Finally, we tried the Wesmalle Double Bruin (read: Broon).  That was also quite delicious, but we preferred the others.  So, at the end we ordered a Grand size of the lambic and the Rochefort.  We each drank half, then switched, and finished off the other half.

After that we walked back to our hotel to sleep.
